Marking Scheme
Overview
There are 5 categories for marking. In competition, there will be three judges with the following responsibilities:
- Judge A:
- Fluency & Accuracy
- Waqf & Ibtidā'
- Sawt & Lahn
- Judge B (Moderator):
- Judge C:
1. Fluency & Accuracy [30%]
Mistakes in this category inculde:
- Changes in the harakah / signs (e.g. reciting salama instead of sulima)
- Changes in the hurūf / letters (e.g. reciting ya’malūn instead of
ta’malūn)
- Getting stuck or stuttering
Additional rules for memorization:
- Scenario 1:
- If the participant gets stuck, record 1 mistakes on fluency and give them 8-10 seconds to see if they continue by themselves.
- If they're still silent, record a 2nd mistake and propmpt them with the next (3-5) words.
- Scenario 2:
- If they skip an āyah, or recite an incorrect āyah, stop them and give them 1 mistakes on their fluency.
- Let them know they recited an incorrect āyah, and give them 8-10 econds to recite the correct āyah instead.
- If they're still silent, record a 2nd mitake and prompt them with the next (3-5) words.
- Scenario 3:
- In general, if they skip a word, let them continue but record it as 1 mistake.
2. Waqf & Ibtidā (Stopping) [15%]
Mistakes in this category inculde:
- Incorrect pronounciation when stopping (e.g. stopping at a fatha long vowel, fatha tanween, ta marbuta)
- Incorrectly following the stoppage (waqf) rules in the middle of āyāt
- Breaking incorrectly to breath in the middle of an āyah
3. Makhārij (Pronounciation) [20%]
Mistakes in this category inculde:
- Incorrect pronounciation of letters (e.g. kaaf instead of qaaf)
4. Tajweed [20%]
Mistakes in this category inculde incorrect application of:
- Rules of noon saakin & tanween (ikhfa, idghām, iqlāb, idhār)
- Rules of meem saakin
- Rules of raa
- Qalqala
- Ghunna
- Rule of laam in "Allāh"
- Maddah
- Tashdeed (shaddah)
- Changing long vowels into short vowels, and vice-versa (e.g. ba to baa)
5. Sawt & Lahn (Style) [15%]
Judges are to assign a score of 0-100 in this category.
